The Company
Nanook was incorporated in 2008, initially acting as a sub advisor to a US commodity fund. The initial core team was comprised of experienced energy professionals who had previously held senior positions at various utilities, energy merchants and investment banks. In 2014, Nanook launched its first fund, investing in energy products based on fundamental modelling of demand and supply. The team has grown organically over the past 15 years, with a team of 55 people and combined assets under management of circa $2bn. The Team
The successful candidate will join a team of eight quants focused on the quantitative modelling of fundamentals in the global Gas and Power sectors. The team maintain, develop and extend a large number of models and manage associated data. The variety of work and data is exceptionally broad, ranging from simulating outages in Norwegian gas infrastructure, to modelling electricity transmission in northern Japan, to forecasting hydro electricity generation in Brazil.
The Role
We are looking for a Weather Analyst to join the Quant Fundamentals team at Nanook and lead the drive to scale and expand our weather platform. They will integrate into the quant team and work closely with fundamental analysts and data engineers to produce best in class weather forecasts.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Leading the drive to scale and expand our weather platform.
2. Taking responsibility for our internal weather algorithms. Including reviewing, monitoring, recalibrating and improving these algorithms.
3. Being the primary interface between the Quant and Technology/Data Engineering teams. For example, working to specify data pipelines etc.
4. Being the primary point of contact for the trading and analytics teams in terms of queries about the weather processes, our algorithms and small research tasks.
5. Understanding and collating the weather requirements of the different trading desks and analyst teams, as well as conducting ad hoc research to answer desk questions.
6. Searching for new weather datasets (historical) and forecasts (AI and numerical).
7. Evaluating available numerical and AI weather forecasts according to specific internal criteria.
Your Experience should include things like:
· A solid foundation in the fundamentals of weather & atmospheric sciences.
· Familiarity with data-driven weather techniques, for example forecast de-biasing and climatology estimation.
· Experience working with modern data formats e.g. netCDF, Zarr, GRIB.
· Experience working with large multidimensional datasets and associated technologies (e.g. xarray, dask, spark).
· Experience evaluating weather forecasts for different purposes, at different horizons etc.
· Some knowledge of AI weather forecasting approaches would be beneficial.
Personal Attributes
Strong academic record and a degree with high mathematical content and relevance to weather forecasting.
Intellectually robust with an analytic approach to problem solving and an ability to tackle new problems creatively.
Self-organised with the ability to effectively manage time across multiple projects and with competing business demands and priorities.
Highly motivated and collaborative; able to establish and maintain a close working relationship with quantitative researchers, developers, traders and senior business people alike.
Confident communicator: able to argue a point concisely and deal positively with conflicting views, both in informal and more formal business settings.
