Quant Analyst - Fundamentals Modelling
The Company
Nanook was incorporated in 2008, initially acting as a sub advisor to a US commodity fund. The initial core team was comprised of experienced energy professionals who had previously held senior positions at various utilities, energy merchants and investment banks. In 2014, Nanook launched its first fund, investing in energy products based on fundamental modelling of demand and supply. Following the success of a small allocation to a number of systematic strategies, a new, systematic fund, initially focused on commodities, was launched in Feb 2023. The team has grown organically over the past 15 years, with a team of 45 people and combined assets under management of circa $2bn. Quantitative and technical excellence combined with a thorough and diligent approach to analysis are all attributes that are critical to success at Nanook.
The Team
The successful candidate will join a team of six quants focused on the quantitative modelling of fundamentals in the global Gas and Power sectors. The team maintain, develop and extend a large number of models and manage associated data. The variety of work and data is exceptionally broad, ranging from simulating outages in Norwegian gas infrastructure, to modelling electricity transmission in northern Japan, to forecasting hydro electricity generation in Brazil.

The Role
We are looking for a Quant Analyst to join the Quant Fundamentals team at Nanook. They will integrate into the quant team, work with fundamental analysts, as well as use/develop tools to train and deploy mathematical models.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyzing fundamental data to identify patterns and trends.
- Using and developing mathematical model tools to represent fundamental quantities in the Gas and Power sectors.
- Testing the accuracy and effectiveness of mathematical models through cross validation and other methods.
- Creating reports and presentations that communicate findings and recommendations to traders, analysts and other stakeholders.
- Keeping up-to-date with the latest modelling developments and applying new insights to improve models and strategies.
Technical and Business Skills
This is a time of rapid growth so you will need to be able to get up to speed quickly with the full breadth of the opportunity. You'll need to possess a significant proportion of the following skill set:
Required
- Experience with data analysis and predictive modelling (econometrics / statistical modelling / machine learning / data science).
- Experience with R, Python or similar scripting language.
- Experience querying data from database/data warehouse using T-SQL/MYSQL
- Robust understanding of probability and statistics.
- Great communication skills coupled with the ability to work closely with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
Advantageous
- Exposure to practical application of neural networks in Keras/Tensorflow for computer vision and/or NLP.
- Experience and exposure to energy markets.
- Experience using version control with git.
- Strong programming ability with knowledge of modern programming best practices.
- Taking models to production: Familiarity with Python and/or R and data science model deployment pipelines.
Personal Attributes
- Strong academic record and a degree with high mathematical content e.g. Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering from a leading university.
- Intellectually robust with an analytic approach to problem solving and an ability to tackle new problems creatively.
- Self-organised with the ability to effectively manage time across multiple projects and with competing business demands and priorities.
- Highly motivated and collaborative; able to establish and maintain a close working relationship with quantitative researchers, developers, traders and senior business people alike.
- Confident communicator: able to argue a point concisely and deal positively with conflicting views, both in informal and more formal business settings.
